OUTSTANDING IMPLEMENTATION AND ADOPTION OF SAFE SPORT PRACTICES (SCHOOL)
GOLD
St Paul's Catholic College Greystanes Prepare and Prevention
The program was designed to reduce the number of preventable injuries in contact sports played at the school through the adoption of adequate preparation and training techniques.
The program involved training and supporting 12 senior students who volunteered to learn a range of preventative techniques such as strapping and bandaging, warm up and cool down and also having the responsibility for the maintenance of protective equipment, checking the grounds and facilities were safe and players were adequately hydrated.
Two students were allocated to the school's teams in ruby league, union, soccer and AFL and attended all games and training sessions and were responsible for removing hazards on the field, coordinating safety gear and player welfare.
This program has resulted in coaches being able to increase their focus on skill development and technique, a reduction in injuries and better results in competition matches. Some of the students are also volunteering the skills they have learnt through this program to local clubs in the community.
