OUTSTANDING EDUCATION AND PROMOTION OF SAFE SPORT PRACTICES (SCHOOL)

SILVER

St Michael's Catholic Primary School
Keep cool, play by the rules

Over the past five years, St Michael's Nowra has been working towards greater participation and safety in their rugby league programs and in the last 12 months has enhanced its safe sports policy to include an innovate program to tackle aggression and ensure all games of footy are played by the rules.

With the goal of developing team work, mutual respect and participation rates, the school actually consulted with the pupils in developing the 'keep cool, play by the rules program'.

The school worked with students to develop rules for playground versions of all codes of football to encourage safety and being a supportive team. The students also self-regulate their games to ensure that everyone is playing by the rules.

The program is taught in the classroom and on the field pupils have the support of mentors, coaches and clinics. As a result, the school has seen an increase in participation in football by both male and female students and gala day participation rates up from 40 boys to 75 boys and girls since the program began.

The program has also had a flow on effect to playground behaviour as students have set their own standard of having fun and why its important to keep your cool and play by the rules!
