St Joseph's High School Aberdeen Sun, Fun and Safety Awareness Day and Bronze Medallion Program
St Joseph's High wanted to deliver water safety programs that went beyond just theory in the classroom so developed a mandatory program for all year seven pupils to expose students to a real beach environment and strengthen their knowledge, confidence and skills about safety issues such as rips, waves and sun safety.
The program has been in place for the past four years and is held at Merewether Beach and involves the local surf life saving club and volunteer parents. The school believes holding the course at the beach allows for deeper message saturation and the program has increased the student's confidence around the ocean.
The school's commitment to water safety is also demonstrated through their annually run bronze medallion program available to year ten and senior students, where students attend the local pool to complete the program during school hours.
As a result of the program students have demonstrated more confidence in the water while receiving an opportunity to broaden their water rescue and safety skills and obtain a formal qualification.
