OUTSTANDING SAFE SPORT PRACTICES, PETER WYNN'S SCORE AWARD (STATEWIDE)

BRONZE

NSW Rugby League and NSW Sport and Recreation
Spectator Anger Education Program

The Spectator Anger Education program is designed to directly assist crowd spectators who exhibit unacceptable expressions of anger in a sports setting. The program is the first of its kind in the sports industry and was developed by NSW Sport and Recreation, NSW Rugby League and a clinical psychologist.

After growing concerns regarding the intensity and frequency of poor sideline behaviour and its adverse effect on players in junior league matches, the pilot program was trialled in the Western Suburbs and Penrith Junior leagues.

Spectator and parents who have been suspended from matches were invited to participate in three group sessions and four individual sessions and learnt about triggers for anger in a sport setting and their consequences as well skills training in socially acceptable behaviour.

The trial helped to provide the junior league community with the tools and strategies needed to become the best parent or supporter they can be while attending a juniors game.

Six people took part in the trial and provided positive feedback on the program. The successful trial will help inform clubs to develop code of conduct policies and has the potential to be rolled out across more sports in the future.
